The Different Types of Mouthguards that Can Protect Your Smile

Are you ever afraid of injuring or knocking out your teeth when you participate in contact sports and activities? If so, our Dental Center team is happy to help you protect your smile while you are active!

We strongly recommend wearing a high-quality mouthguard during any activity that has a high risk of hard, forceful objects hitting your mouth. If you wear a mouthguard, your teeth will be protected and your chances of injuring your smile greatly decrease.

There are many different types of mouthguards available in the world today. Some of those mouthguards are:

Stock mouthguards: A stock mouthguard is cheap and it is available at most sporting goods stores. It’s preformed and ready to wear, so all you need to do is take it out of its package and put it on your teeth. Because this guard is performed, there is little you can do to adjust its fit and shape, so please keep that in mind.

Boil-and-bite mouth guards: A boil-and-bite mouthguard can also be found at most sporting goods stores, but you can slightly adjust its form and fit. It’s made of thermoplastic material, so all you need to do is soften the appliance in hot water, put it in your mouth, and then use your fingers and tongue to apply pressure to it. It is a little bulky, but it offers a better fit than a stock mouthguard.

Custom-fitted mouthguards: A custom-fitted mouthguard is the most recommended guard available. It is custom made by your dentist, and it provides the perfect fit for pristine comfort and protection. Your dentist will create this guard based on the shape of your mouth, so it will fit flawlessly over your teeth.
