cavity filling

Filling Materials Are Determined by the Location and Appearance of a Cavity

A dental filling is commonly used by your dentists, Dr. Ball and Dr. Broadbent, to repair a modest-sized cavity that is located on the enamel layer of a tooth. Dental fillings in Orem, Utah, are artificial materials that are designed to replace the decayed enamel and restore the full function of the compromised tooth. The tooth’s primary function, the location of the cavity and the tooth’s appearance in your smile will all be factored into the material that Drs. Ball and Broadbent recommend for the filling.

Composite fillings are made from a resin material that can be shaded to match the color of the surrounding enamel. These filling can be applied in a single appointment.

Amalgam fillings are durable and can also be applied in a single appointment. Amalgam is dark in color so it is rarely used to fill a cavity in a spot that is visible in your smile.

Ceramic fillings are a good choice for teeth that appear in your smile. The material can be shaded to match the color of the surrounding tooth enamel.

The occlusal, or biting surface, of the back teeth is primarily called upon to do a lot of chewing and grinding of tough foods. This makes durable materials, like gold and base metals, a good choice for fillings in these areas.

Gold and porcelain fillings need to be prepared at a professional dental lab. While you await completion of the filling, Drs. Ball and Broadbent will cover the cleaned enamel surface with a temporary filling. When the final filling is ready, a member of the team will call you back in for a brief, follow-up appointment. The temporary filling will be removed and the gold or porcelain will be cemented in place with a strong dental adhesive.
